Calls for Full Inquiry grow as scale of Labour's Athlete-less Village becomes apparent

Birmingham Local Conservatives, joined by Birmingham Live and other opposition councillors, are calling for a full independent inquiry into Labour-run Birmingham City Council's handling of the Perry Barr Athletes' Village project. Despite receiving planning approval in 2018, the project failed to house a single athlete during the 2022 Commonwealth Games, leaving taxpayers with an enormous financial burden.

The development cost £500 million to construct and is now projected to cost an additional £311 million in interest over 40 years, bringing the total to £811 million. This equates to a loss of £473,000 per unit, despite house prices rising 24% during the construction period. To cover costs, the Labour Administration plans to sell homes from the project, likely incurring a loss of over £300 million.

Far from providing a lasting legacy for the city, the Athletes' Village has become a symbol of mismanagement, costing £17.2 Million every year for the next 40 years. We urge residents to sign our petition for an independent inquiry, demanding the Administration is held accountable.
