In a report by the Housing Ombudsman, Birmingham City Council jointly topped the table which shows those landlords with maladministration findings in relation to complaint handling with respect to damp and mould. Birmingham received a 100% complaint handling maladministration score which means it mishandled all the complaints the Ombudsman probed.

Table

Birmingham also features in another two of the tables with one showing landlord performance in relation to dealing with reports of damp and mould giving Birmingham City Council a maladministration rate of 64%.

One resident who responded to the call for evidence by the Housing Ombudsman said:

“There are obvious holes and cracks in the walls. I keep the property heated properly and let out condensation … I spend hours cleaning off mould and I can smell it when I sleep at night.”

Cllr Ken Wood, who is the Shadow Cabinet Member for Homes and Neighbourhoods commented on the report by saying

“Yet again Birmingham City Councils Housing has hit the headlines by appearing in the Ombudsman’s latest “league” tables for worst performing landlords on damp and mould. Birmingham City Council really does need to start looking after its tenants properly by providing safe homes that tenants can be proud to live in.”
