Birmingham Local Conservatives welcome the High Court’s decision to ratify an indefinite injunction ensuring bin lorries can leave depots without obstruction from striking workers. However, we are strongly critical of the Labour-led Council for being asleep at the wheel with their sluggish response, leaving residents to endure months of disruption as waste piled up across the city.
Cllr Robert Alden (Con, Erdington), Leader of the Opposition and Birmingham Local Conservatives, said:
The High Court’s ruling is a victory for Birmingham’s residents, who have been forced to live with almost 40,000 tonnes of uncollected rubbish due to Labour’s inaction since January. Labour’s failure to show leadership and act swiftly has left our streets in chaos. This injunction should have been sought weeks ago to spare our communities this ordeal. It’s time for Labour to adopt our practical and costed plan to clean up Birmingham’s streets and deliver the services residents deserve.
Cllr Ewan Mackey (Con, Sutton Roughley), Deputy Leader of the Opposition and Birmingham Local Conservatives, added:
Residents have been let down by Labour’s dithering while bin lorries were blocked, and waste mounted up. This injunction is a step forward, but it’s only a sticking plaster. The Labour Council must now prioritise resolving this industrial dispute to prevent further disruption. Our comprehensive plan to modernise waste collection and keep Birmingham clean is ready to be implemented – Labour needs to act on it now.
Councillor Alden concluded:
Only the Local Conservatives offer residents a different future, with a plan for cleaner streets and a cleaner city
