LOCAL CONSERVATIVES CALLS ON NEW LIBERAL DEMOCRAT-GREEN LEADERSHIP TO SAVE WEEKLY BIN COLLECTIONS
Councillor Robert Alden (Con, Erdington), Leader of the Birmingham Conservative Group, has written to Birmingham City Council’s new Leader and Deputy Leader, urging them to take immediate action to save weekly bin collections and restore confidence in local services, changing course from the failures residents have experienced over recent years.
In his letter, Councillor Alden congratulates the new administration on taking office and sets out four priorities for cleaner streets which he believes should form the foundation of a fresh start for Birmingham:
• Protect weekly household bin collections.
• Secure a lawful and sustainable end to the waste dispute.
• Launch a city-wide clean-up operation and consider dedicated ward based clean up crews.
• Restore recycling collections as quickly as possible, while protecting weekly bin collections and carrying out an amensity to clear recycling bins that have become contaminated during the course of the strike.
Councillor Alden said:
“The new Liberal Democrat-Green administration has inherited a city facing significant challenges and residents will rightly expect to see a different approach. Across Birmingham, people have endured over 18 months of disruption to basic services. Communities want cleaner streets, reliable waste collections and a council focused on delivering for residents".
“The decisions made over the coming weeks will show whether the new leadership intends to continue down the same path of Labour, who wanted to scrap weekly bin collections this year and left our streets a mess, or take the opportunity to change direction. Weekly bin collections remain an essential service for many households across Birmingham and should be protected. While any settlement to end the industrial dispute must be lawful, affordable and avoid creating future liabilities. Birmingham taxpayers simply cannot afford yet more bills for political mistakes".
“Local Conservatives are clear our weekly bin collection service must be saved”.
The Birmingham Conservative Group is calling on the new administration to provide clear commitments to save weekly bin collections, lawfully end the strike, clean up the city and put residents first
Councillor Alden added:
“Birmingham needs leadership that focuses on delivering well run core services. This is an opportunity for the new administration to turn the page and show residents that the Council is listening by saving weekly bin collections and cleaning up our city. Where they bring forward measures that clean up the city and improve services for residents we will support those changes, and we will hold the administration to account where it fails to deliver.”
