The Green, Lib Dem, Independent coalition running Birmingham City Council have announced they will continue the Labour policy of making Birmingham the UK's first 20mph only city with the introduction of a blanket 20mph speed limit across the city. The proposal would be reducing the speed limit on all routes classified below A-roads, regardless of whether there has been any issues on the road.
The proposal has been slammed by the Local Conservatives for imposing a one size fits all, anti-motorist proposal on residents, regardless of whether they agree.
Local Conservatives Shadow Cabinet Member for Transport Cllr Tim Huxtable said "The Council should drop these city wide plans to impose 20mph speed limits across the City. 20mph are far more effective when restricted to being focused on small zones in front of things like schools and parks and where residents support them. The City Council's plans to turn every road into 20mph, will simply not be enforced leading to law abiding people being punished while others simply ignore the speed limit. The Council's plans are unworkable".
Leader of the Local Conservatives Cllr Robert Alden said "If Birmingham City Council want to get serious about making our roads safer, they should be focusing their efforts on tackling the record number of unlicensed and uninsured drivers in the city. Targeting these people will have a far greater impact on people's safety in the city than their plans to target all drivers will".
Robert added "One of the top concerns from residents this year has been the shocking state of the roads. The Council should also therefore be focusing on getting the potholes fixed now, not attacking motorists".
In May, Birmingham Labour and their failed policies were kicked out of the Council, yet residents are now faced with some of these very same failed policies continuing under the Green, Lib Dem and Independent coalition.
Birmingham Local Conservatives have now launched a petition opposing the plan.
