Birmingham Local Conservatives have today announced that a Conservative- run council will carry out task and finish inquiries into both grooming gangs in the city and Birmingham’s bankruptcy.
Birmingham Local Conservatives have been campaigning for the last 3 years for the council to hold an inquiry into the bankruptcy, and despite originally promising to, have since refused to proceed with it.
Cllr Robert Alden, Leader of the Opposition and Birmingham Local Conservatives, said:
Having bankrupted the Council, Labour have now backtracked on their promise for an inquiry. The residents of Birmingham deserve answers to why Labour ignored all the warning signs, time and again. That’s why a Local Conservative-run Council will give brummies the answers they deserve.
Last year, Birmingham City Council agreed to demands from the Local Conservative group to call for a grooming gang inquiry nationally, and to instruct staff not to delete any evidence that such an inquiry may need to get to the truth.
Since then, with little progress nationally, Birmingham Local Conservatives are committing to holding a local task and finish inquiry to try and protect children in Birmingham. The findings of this inquiry would then be submitted to the Government, and the national inquiry to try and ensure children and young adults are protected.
Cllr Alden said:
It is vital that children in our city are kept safe. A Local Conservative-run council will move heaven and earth to get answers and do all we can do to ensure these horrific crimes stop.
