Councillor Robert Alden (Con, Erdington), Leader of the Opposition & Birmingham Local Conservatives, has today written to Rt Hon Lisa Nandy MP, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, expressing profound disappointment at the Department’s decision to overrule Historic England’s expert recommendation and deny Grade II listed status to the Court Chambers and Crown Public House on Corporation Street.

The Victorian-era building, a striking example of the city’s architectural heritage with many original features intact, stands as a testament to Birmingham’s industrial past, innovation, and social history. Despite Historic England’s clear advice that it merits protection, the decision to refuse listing risks further erosion of the City’s irreplaceable historic built environment.

Councillor Alden stated:

This unusual step to dismiss the independent advice of heritage experts is deeply concerning. Buildings like the Court Chambers and Crown Public House are not just bricks and mortar; they are the soul of our city. They connect us to our forebears, attract visitors, support local economies, and instil pride in our residents.

In a city that has unfortunately witnessed too much demolition in pursuit of ‘progress’, we must prioritise preservation. Overruling Historic England sets a worrying precedent that favours short-term development over long-term cultural value. Birmingham Local Conservatives stand firmly against this approach.

The letter urges the Secretary of State to reconsider and align with Historic England’s assessment by granting Grade II listing without delay. It emphasises the responsibility of current generations as custodians of heritage for future ones: “We did not just inherit these buildings from our forefathers; we borrow them from our children.”

Birmingham Local Conservatives remain unwavering in their commitment to protecting the city’s heritage while championing a vision for a beautiful Birmingham, one that celebrates its historic character, blends it thoughtfully with modern growth, and ensures that iconic landmarks are safeguarded for generations to come.

Councillor Alden added:

We are dedicated to building a Birmingham that honours its past while embracing its future. Protecting treasures like Court Chambers and the Crown Public House is central to that vision. We call on the Government to reverse this decision and demonstrate true respect for our shared history.

Councillor Alden has also called on the Labour-run city council to put its weight behind saving the buildings and other heritage assets, saying:

We have seen under Labour the shameful neglect of many of our city’s finest buildings, from Highbury Hall to the Methodist Central Hall, from the Hall of Memory to Station Street, listing by itself is not a panacea, but it does provide useful protections against unwanted development. What we really need, though, is a local council and government that values our history and takes pride in our city. Only a vote for Local Conservatives in May is a vote to protect our heritage and clean up our city.
