Council Agrees to Strengthen Water Safety Communications Following Local Conservative Councillor's Call
Councillor Anja Pawson (Con, Sutton Vesey) has welcomed Birmingham City Council's positive response to her call for stronger water safety communications during periods of hot weather.
During last week’s hot weather, Councillor Pawson wrote to the Leader of the Council urging the Council to improve warnings about the dangers of swimming in lakes and other open water that are not designated for swimming. This follows concerns that some messaging was ambiguous.
In his response, the Leader has agreed with a number of the suggestions put forward by Anja and confirmed that officers have been instructed to:
• Review and strengthen all public messaging to clearly state that people should not enter open water that is not designated for swimming or lifeguarded.
• Work with relevant teams to assess signage in parks and other high-risk locations, including Sutton Park, to ensure it is clear, visible and impactful.
• Continue to work closely with partners such as West Midlands Fire Service, West Midlands Police and the Royal Life Saving Society to ensure consistent messaging.
Anja also asked for additional support to schools with improved information materials for distribution, particular on days when excessive heat forces closure or an early finish. Whilst this was omitted from the Leader’s response, she will continue to push for this to happen, believing it to be an important link in reaching those most at risk.
Councillor Pawson said:
"I'm grateful to the Leader for responding so positively and acting quickly on this important issue. Following the heartbreaking tragedy in Sutton Park last year, and those we have seen in the region and wider country this year, we all have a responsibility to do everything we can to prevent another family experiencing such a devastating loss. Clear communication saves lives. Young people need to hear a simple message: if a lake isn't a designated, lifeguarded swimming area, don't go in. As well as improving its own messaging, the council also now needs to support schools with materials that can be used to help spread this vital message."
Councillor Pawson is encouraging residents to make the most of the warm weather while putting safety first.
She added:
"We are fortunate to have wonderful parks and green spaces across Birmingham, and I hope everyone enjoys them over the summer. But no day out is worth risking your life. Please enjoy the sunshine safely, keep hydrated, look out for family and friends, and remember that open water can be far more dangerous than it appears. Parents should take a few minutes to speak to their children and teenagers about these risks. That conversation could save a life."
Councillor Pawson said she has already started to see greater clarity in messaging on the council’s social media channel. She looks forward to seeing the Council implement all the suggested improvements, including improved signage in parks and support for schools, and will continue to support efforts to raise awareness of water safety across Birmingham.
